Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) issued a call to action to encourage leaders to make sustainability a priority at its 16th-annual BSR Conference Nov. 4-7, 2008, in New York. More than 1,300 business leaders from 50 countries are expected to gather at the conference to promote and implement sustainable business strategies.
"With sustainability at the top of the world's agenda, the global business landscape is changing fast," said Aron Cramer, BSR President and CEO. "Staying ahead of the curve requires dynamic leadership and systemic solutions that deliver solid financial, social and environmental results."
Three global business leaders have been announced as presenters, including Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of General Electric; Anders Dahlvig, president and CEO of IKEA Group; and John Anderson, president and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co.
GE's Immelt will explain his vision for the company's ambitious "ecomagination" initiative and show how paying attention to the environment is good for the bottom line. Immelt, who was named by Barron’s magazine as one of the "World's Best CEOs," led GE when it was recognized as "America's Most Admired Company" by Fortune and one of the "World's Most Respected Companies" by Barron's and the Financial Times.
Dahlvig, who joined the IKEA Group in 1984, was honored with the U.S. Foreign Policy Association's Global Social Responsibility award in 2006. In 2002, he received the Swedish award for Good Environmental Leadership because of his independent and persistent work with environmental and sustainability issues.
As the head of Levi Strauss & Co., Anderson has helped the company establish its worldwide reputation as a leader in corporate responsibility. In 27 years with Levi's, he has turned the company's sourcing operation into a competitive asset and continued to strengthen its responsible practices with suppliers around the world.
